Rep. Ilhan Omar Praises President Trump

Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar offered rare praise to President Donald Trump’s coronavirus response.

The progressive Democrat, who’s among the fiercest critics of the President, called his response “incredible.” This came as a reaction to news that President Trump signed the second coronavirus aid package. The package includes “suspending mortgage foreclosures, demanding cash payments to Americans, now invoking the Defense Production Act to force private firms to produce needed supplies.”

“Politics aside, this is incredible and the right response in this critical time,” Rep. Omar said.

“… unprecedented times require unprecedented leadership and we are seeing that in our country right now. I have faith that we will survive this as a nation and build together,” she added.

The Minnesota lawmaker who has feuded online with the President on multiple occasions is a member of the infamous “Squad” alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib.

Rep. Omar also called for a bipartisan approach to tackling the coronavirus outbreak, which has so far infected at least 14,354 with 217 deaths.

“We should never let politics get in the way of good policy. This is a great start and hope others will be part of a united front to push for good policies that will help us work through the economic anxiety the country is feeling right now,” she added.

Praise from Other Sources

Aside from Rep. Omar, other critics of the President like California Governor Gavin Newsom and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, also lauded President Trump’s response.

Governor Newsom said the President is “not only on top of it, but they’re securing and beginning the process of distributing those swabs” to be used for testing.

Governor Cuomo said, “the president is doing the right thing in offering to step up with New York and I appreciate it.”

Families First Coronavirus Response Act

On Wednesday, President Trump signed a coronavirus aid bill called the “Families First Coronavirus Response Act.” It provides free coronavirus testing and guarantees paid sick leaves to workers who fall ill or caring for a family member with the coronavirus disease.

The law also provides additional Medicaid funding, food assistance, and unemployment benefits. The Department of Housing and Urban Development will also halt foreclosures and evictions through April to relieve Americans at risk of losing jobs from missing rent and mortgage payments.

President Trump also invoked his authority under the Defense Production Act to marshal private companies for the production of critical medical supplies like masks, ventilators, and respirators to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“I want all Americans to understand. We are at war with an invisible enemy, but that enemy is no match for the spirit and resolve of the American people,” he said.

$1 Trillion Package in the Works

Meanwhile, the government is pushing for a third emergency measure worth $1 trillion as part of the wider government response to coronavirus. This spending plan would include billions in direct payments to Americans to cushion the economic impact of the ongoing spread of the pandemic.

The White House is pitching for a $1,000 direct payment to Americans in its stimulus package, while Senate Republicans are proposing a $1,200 direct cash assistance.

The proposed direct payments are initially expected to be done in two groups on April 6 and May 18 both rounds total $500 billion.
